Born in Cardiff, Wales, he moved to London at age 10.

He earned his Degree in Philosophy at the University College of London.

He worked as a reporter for the South Wales Echo and the Evening Standard.

He served a managerial post at the publishing house Everes Books.

He published The Eye of the Needle.

He published four novels that were very successful internationally.

He published The Pillars of the Earth.

He wrote another nine novels.

He is married to Barbara Follett, a Labour Member of the British Parliament.

He is the father of two children from his previous marriage.
